Een geheimzinnige videoband duikt op als Jupiter Jones zijn verjaardag viert in Rocky Beach. Op de band is een opname te zien van zijn al lang overleden ouders, ze proberen via deze manier de sleutel te geven voor de oplossing van een lastig raadsel. De sleutel brengt de jonge vrienden via een lange weg naar het oude en verlaten grondgebied van de krankzinnige uitvinder Terril, dat gelegen is in een verlaten bos in Noord-Californië.
